Your Emotions Will Affect Your Interior Design Choices – Interior Design Firm
Wouldn’t it be great if your design project happened as smoothly and quickly as what you see on HGTV? Imagine…. you sign a letter of agreement and voila the demo crew is at your front door at 7am the next day. That would be nice, but the reality is…there’s a lot more to it than that. We’ve decided to break it down for you with Urbanology’s Life Cycle of the Design Process. A.K.A. How to Keep your Sanity and Save your Marriage While Designing/Remodeling
Here’s a brief outline of the REAL phases an interior design project moves through. This will help you know what to expect before you begin, anticipate the emotions and feel prepared and comfortable with the process. Let’s get started!
Step 1: Phone Call and Introductions
Step one is kind of like a first date without all the butterflies. You call us, ask questions and get a feel for Urbanology. Do you like us? This is where we get to know you, your design dilemmas and desires. We’ll direct you to our website, Houzz and Pinterest Board (if you haven’t already seen them). If we decide to have a second date we’ll move on to Step 2.
Emotions during this step: Cautious, Inquisitive, a bit nervous but excited!
Step 2: The Consultation
Think of step two as a personal therapy session. This is where we get to know you and dig deeper to find out specifically what you’re looking for and what you love. We’ll ask a lot of questions and inventory your existing space and furnishings. We will take pictures, measurements and discuss your budget and timeline. We will cast high-level vision and set expectations for the rest of the project. One of two things can happen after the Consultation:
1. You like us! Yay! You agree to the initial proposal and sign the contract.
2. Your significant other steps in with a few more questions…totally normal! We work hard to get all questions answered before proceeding.
Emotions before the consultation: Nervous anticipation about how the meeting will go. Emotions during the consultation: “Wow! This is awesome but a lot of information!”
Emotions after the consultation: “YES! I feel heard and understood about my ideas! We are on the same page! Let’s get this project started!
Step 3: Client Homework
We are moving forward and our communication is increasing. We send you an Ideabook on Houzz and ask you to save pictures of anything that inspires you. Pictures of rooms, rugs, light fixtures, colors…anything you see that makes you swoon. We promise this will be fun! We will walk you through the process in order to hone in more specifically on your style and what you love.
Emotions during this step: “I’m not as decisive as I thought!” Excitement for your new space increases.
Step 4: Design Development
Once we receive your Inspiration Board we get to work on your Digital Design Board. We are so excited we can hardly contain ourselves! The creative ideas are flowing as we research and pull together fabric swatches, paint colors, flooring options, pictures of furniture and other accessories that will show you the overall look and feel of your new space.
Emotions during this step: Anxious anticipation as you wait for the Design Board reveal. Waiting is HARD!!
Step 5: Collaboration with Contractors and Installers
We collaborate with contractors and get the ball rolling on quotes for flooring, paint and any other remodeling services. We will schedule all of these meetings…you don’t have to worry about a thing! Once proposals come back we will send you a detailed quote.
Emotions during this step: Your designer is on top of all the details and logistics – there is a huge sense of relief that you are not going it alone!
Step 6: Time to Inspire – Design Board Presentation
The day has finally come! We sit down for the Digital Design Board reveal. All that hard work has paid off as you see your new space coming together. We listen to your feedback, review the final plan and make any necessary adjustments. *At this point in the process it’s always a possibility that you and your significant other may not see eye-to-eye on design selections. This is where the process may slow down a bit as we work to incorporate their ideas, input and opinions. But fear not! We plan for this and will patiently coach you through finding a Design Plan that you BOTH can agree on and LOVE! Compromise is key here folks.
Emotions during this step: Over the moon! Some second-guessing about your final selections could set in here (again, totally normal!). Overall, you are confident and thrilled to see the project moving forward! It’s starting to feel real!
Step 7: Tweaking & Final Approval
Say hello to your new best friend…your Designer! We are probably talking several times a day as we work on final plan revisions and selections. You will sign off on the approved item list. We will finalize the design and touch base once more before ordering your furniture, fixtures and other items. Once all decisions have been made, the pace of the project will slow down a bit as we wait for your items to arrive. We won’t be talking as much, but rest assured…this a good thing! It means all our bases are covered and we are in the home stretch of final execution.
Emotions during this step: “I’m so glad my designer listens to me!” You are super focused and engaged.
Emotions after all decisions have been made: Relief! Proud of all the great choices you’ve made.
Step 8: Implementation & Installation
It’s GO time! Your house may be a mess, but there is excitement in the air as we get to see our ideas come to life. We touch base frequently to ensure work is progressing as planned and any concerns are getting addressed. Following construction, we coordinate the delivery and installation of your new furnishings and accessories. Seeing the huge smile on your face as the space comes together is what we live for!
Emotions during this step: “When will my house be back to normal?” Overall, this phase is filled with excitement, surprises, and a few “I-Never-Knew-It-Could-Be-Like This” exclamations.
Step 9: Project Completion – Design Comes to Life
The final picture is hung and last speck of dust removed. We sit back and admire the beautiful new space…a space you will never want to leave. It’s yours! The dream that began on paper has become a reality. Before we conclude our time together, we do a final walk-through and prepare a list of any remaining small items that need attention. We also discuss the care and maintenance of your new finishes and furnishings so you can enjoy them for years to come. As we drive away, we are content knowing our collaboration has laid the foundation for you to live and work in a space that inspires you every day. Simple. Creative. Beautiful.
Emotions during this step: Thrilled beyond measure with your beautiful new space!
