12 Design Trends You Need to Know in 2016 – Interior Design Dallas

Every year I go to Market in Dallas for all-things-design. Seminars, showrooms and
lots of inspiration. I just wrapped up a full week and my head is spinning with all the
possibilities! One of the hot topics discussed this year was design trends for 2016.
What is going to stick around for awhile and what is fading fast? Dark floors or light?
Open shelving? Is subway tile here to stay? Let’s take a look at the top 12 trends that
stood out to me as we head in to 2016:

1

FORMAL DINING ROOMS
I am beyond excited for sit-down family meals to make a come-back! More
homeowners are opting to keep their formal dining rooms instead of converting them
to offices, media rooms or playrooms as we have seen in the past. Here’s to hoping
they are all as stylish as this pale, pretty one here.

2

POPS OF PRINT AND PATTERNED TILE
Geometrics are hot right now and will continue to be in 2016. They are being used
to spice up neutral spaces like this bathroom above. You will also see them on
floors and backsplashes in kitchens. Not ready to jump right in to geometrics but
are curious!? Try a fun patterned pillow for the sofa.

3

OUTDOOR FABRIC USED INDOOR
Outdoor fabric has come a long way over the last few years. It’s increasingly harder to
distinguish them from traditional fabric. I love how durable and easy-to-clean they are. Perfect
for high-traffic living rooms like the one shown here. I’m also using indoor outdoor fabrics for
throw pillows and other upholstered items that take a beating. Great for families with kids and
or pets!

4

BRINGING THE OUTDOORS IN
Free, abundant, beautiful sunshine. Living in Texas we have no shortage of it! Take advantage of
that by letting every ounce of natural sunlight in as possible! Again its FREE and your best
decorating tool!! Also bring in greenery and natural elements such as exposed wood and stone.
Large potted plants are making a come back, the REAL kind that is. Fake topiaries and green ivy
above the cabinets are out!

5

TWO-TONE KITCHEN CABINETS
Keep upper cabinets white or neutral for a clean, timeless feel, then get creative with
the lower cabinets by playing with various wood tones and colors to take your kitchen
in two different style directions. I love the simplicity of this kitchen!

COLORED STAINLESS STEEL APPLIANCES
Not sure this one will be here to stay, but I think thats the whole point. Manufactures
realized that stainless steel has become almost timeless. While great for home
owners, its not so great for sales. Boosting their product line with “color” options will
entice the brave to step out and try something new. What do you think? Nearly twothirds
of homeowners polled said they would consider the dark alternative to shiny
silver metal. These shown here are from LG’s new bronze stainless collection. Not my
fave, I like the black better. I do however love the white stainless steel thats gaining
momentum in kitchens. Beautiful!

6

STATEMENT MIRRORS IN BATHROOMS
Plain old rectangular mirrors certainly get the job done,
but why not make a statement? Think large wood-framed
beauties, backlit modern marvels or industrial metal
gems like these that have that WOW factor. Simple can
still make a very powerful statement.

7

MIXED MATERIALS IN OPEN, BARELY THERE KITCHENS
Open shelves are still very popular in kitchens. Why? It makes a space feel more
“open” and interesting. I love the use of wood here on the wall and vent hood. The
big island, farmhouse sink and simple chandelier pull this beautiful space together.
Notice the “white stainless steel range” LOVE!!!

8

LIVING ROOMS THAT DITCH THE TECHNOLOGY
Technology is definitely not going anywhere, but more
and more homeowners are looking for a calm space
where they can power down the screens and read a
book, catch up with family and friends or just enjoy the
silence. I like the sound of that 🙂

9

WHITE KITCHENS WITH POPS OF BOLD COLOR
White kitchen walls and cabinets — and even countertops
— is a trend that will continue for years to come. To avoid a
too-sterile look Punch up all-white spaces with colorful
details like fabric, pillows, tile, floor-to-ceiling bookcases,
furniture, etc.

10

ATTENTION SEEKING BEDROOMS
Homeowners are taking their bedroom sanctuary to new
levels with interesting light fixtures and bold, statement
pieces. The black accent wall here balances the white
painted brick nicely. And I am a sucker for platform beds like
one above!

11

SURPRISING BACKSPLASH AND COUNTERTOP PAIRINGS
You could play it safe with white subway tile and granite
countertops. Certainly nothing wrong with that, but keeping an
open mind about different combinations such as a brick
backsplash with concrete countertops (seen here) or boldcolored
ceramic tile with butcher block countertops definitely
adds pizzaz! We are seeing an emergence of new and
interesting materials that are replacing the traditional granite.

Happy Decorating!
