7 Home Design Trends for 2017

By February 9, 2017 4 Comments

As designers we spend hours viewing design blogs, Instagram feeds, magazines and showrooms looking for the latest styles and home decor trends. We want to know what’s in, what’s next and what feels tired and dated. As we look to the year ahead we are seeing more natural elements emerge with a mix of muted colors, patterns and textures. Long gone are the laser-printed chevron days. It’s time to welcome a more organic vibe. If your home could use a little decor pick-me-up, this just might be the inspiration you’ve been looking for.

Here is what we see trending in home decor for 2017:

Green…In All Shades

Expect to see the color in all tones pop up in rooms across the design world. It’s lively, organic and rich. You will see it in small doses such as in accessories and objets and also in larger upholstered pieces. The hue has dramatic impact from emerald to chartreuse, green will be big this year.

Texture, Texture, Texture

Think pleating and folds, chunky wool and large stitches. Weaving texture into interior design makes it more comfortable and inviting. You will see a mix of fabrics and materials on the rise in 2017. We’re seeing rooms with simple color palettes being all about the textural elements: in fabrics, art, wall treatments and even lighting.

Organic Colors, Patterns And Prints

Does the thought of bold, in-your-face color make you cringe? Don’t worry – it’s all about neutrals this year. Whites, beiges, pale grey, camel and blush pink are super on-trend in 2017. Expect organic forms to dominate rather than laser-printed patterns. And prints will have a more worn in or vintage feel as well.

More Subdued Metal Finishes

We are getting away from the super shiny brass of 2016. Unlacquered brass, which patines over time, is more suitable for 2017. The muted metal warms up any space and compliments a variety of decorating styles. We like it in lighting and accessories whether it be vases, pendants or decorative bowls for the kitchen.

Gray was a prominent color in 2016 and will continue to reign in 2017. We will see different tones of gray…a lot of gray and white and gray in deeper colors. It is a color that compliments a full spectrum of shades so we don’t see it going anywhere anytime soon.

Faux Finishes

It may be the year of natural, raw and organic looking pieces but Faux will be fashionable in 2017. Homeowners and designers are turning to faux materials for a budget-friendly and sometimes more reliable alternative to authentic materials. Faux wood ceiling beams, for example, will not rot or bow like real wood (and look like the real deal). And engineered quartz can withstand heat and acidic food better than marble.

Whether in collections of vases or pots, lamps, light fixtures or wall hangings ceramic provides a raw looking, artisanal finish that is earthy and very on-trend for 2017.

As we all know trends come and go. Rather than feeling bad about what you don’t have – focus on filling your home with beautiful, classic pieces that have meaning and significance to you. Pieces that you find on your travels or that you fall in love with at first glance will never go out of style. We always want our clients to celebrate their individualism and authentic style. Living authentic and beautifully…not THAT is a trend we can get behind in 2017! If you need a little help honing in on your individual style let us know. We’d love to help. Happy decorating!
